Episode 41: Compact Compact, Vodka Myths

Air Date: November 2, 2005

Two semi trucks that collided head-on welded together due to the accident. After being towed as a whole to the junkyard, workers were shocked to discover that the semis trapped a European compact car and its doomed driver between each other.

After obtaining two free semi trucks, their trailers, and a European sports car (a Fiat X1/9) from a fan, the Mythbusters rigged up the two semis to crash. After several mishaps and numerous technical problems, they manage to crash both semis and car, but one semi made it to the car earlier than the other semi, sending the car ricocheting to the side. The crash never "fused" together, instead resulting in a horrific mess of glass, metal, and fiberglass.

(This myth was revisited in Demolition Derby Special.)

Vodka can clean the odor off feet.

Comparison of a commercial foot powder wash vs. a Vodka wash showed that the odor was eliminated on both feet.

Vodka can kill bad breath.

After a mixture of 1 cup Vodka and 9 tbsp of cinnamon powder was left to sit for two weeks in a sealed flask and then strained. It managed to eliminate most odors on par with an over-the-counter mouthwash. The only bad breath smell not eliminated was from smoking cigarettes.

  1. Ray says:

Does it remove alcohol off the breath??? (Sick sort of joke, really. Not even funny.)

  2. Jawa says:

Compact and Compact was totally cool! Even though the myth was busted!
That guy actually gave up his car!

  3. Adam says:

i don’t think that the vodka mouth wash myth worked like you wanted it to be cause mouth wash only works in you mouth you dont swallow it. you inhale cigarettes so maybe thats why it didn’t work?

  4. Franky says:

Just an idea unrelated to the myths, stick a ten pack of dvd’s in a microwave for a minute or so on high.

  5. Franky says:

note- do not do the dvd thing at home(in a secure environment maybe, but still…

  6. Alain says:

My grand-father told me a story once about vodka. A good myth that is… When you drink it… You’lle get drunk hahaha.

  7. Raelene says:

I would like to say that I do not feel fully convinced that tha Compact and Compact myth was busted. 35 miles is not much, what are the possibilities of 2 semi’s going so slow on the same road? Be more likely that 2 semi’s could make contact on a freeway going at a much higher speed. Also just another thought, what if the heat of the engine contributed to the fusing or welding of the two semi’s? still so many possibilities I think. But again im no scientist, I hope what I have said makes sense and is taken into consideration. Thank you!!! :)

    • Roger says:

Seems to me that welding will never take place withut heat and in the tests, neither of the trucks nor the car had engines hot and running.

  8. andy says:

ha ha ha we like vodka!! So does our teachwer that is why she is makeing us do this stupid project!!!

  9. Henk says:

See this minivan is sqaushed between two trucks here in the netherlans on the 2-25-08.
This you could try out in your program.
Minivan is hit at the back end by a semitruck and moved to another semitruck in front of the minivan that was stationerie on the hyway because there was traffic jam

    My regards

  10. John says:

Seen compact on compact show, and being a safety co-ordinator in Canada saw 2 semis rearend eachother on Hwy 401, car in middle. The vehicles did weld together, with car in between. Torches were needed to seperate them.

  11. Robert says:

The only problem I have with the compact compact is there was no fuel in any of the vehicles – wouldn’t the heat from the resultant fire fuse everything together???

  12. craig says:

have you thought that with a fair length of rail and semi trucks with motors running for a few hours might give off the right amount of heat to kind of produce a weld as with the myth compact compact the trucks were involved in a head on collision were they not???

  13. Benjamin says:

This semi truck welding thing obviously did not work because of 3 things.
    1. No fuel to make fire and fusion possible.
    2. All engines of alle 3 viechels would at the time have been very hot. Hereby making the heat for the fusion awalible.
    3. Speed. I dont know where this fusion took place, but if as surgested this was a highway accident, the speed would need to be much faster. Id say this one is deffinatly plaussible.

    Enough said from Denmark:)

  14. Jackson unwin says:

    Compact compact revist 3
Why don’t you put Two of the rockets. That u used in super sized jato rocket car in the back of each truck and do the original test again at a slowwer speed on both trucks approx 20 Then set the rockets in the truck and then it would be plausible

    • Jackson unwin says:

Ps. Both trucks have be at 20mph. Then launch the rockets in each of. The trucks

  15. Lori says:

I don’t know if any fusion took place but you can definitely compact a compact. What a horrific accident.

  16. broden says:

I like what you guys do I have seen all of the episodes so far
