Episode 110: Alcohol Myths

Air Date: October 22, 2008

Alcohol can make people look more attractive.

plausible

To maximize objectivity, the Mythbusters decided to look at a number of sample photos and rate them while sober and again while drunk. Adam started first by rating 30 women and awarded 96 points out of a total of 300. Kari rated photos of 30 men and awarded a total of 154 points. Finally, Jamie awarded 116 points. After a few beers, Adam awarded 121 points, Kari 89, and Jamie 105. After several more beers, Adam awarded 134 points, Kari had 153, and Jamie had 111. Even though they each had different results, the Mythbusters decided the myth was plausible since their overall scores increased when they were drunk.

Drinking black coffee will help a drunk person sober up.

busted

Adam and Jamie, the subjects, showed no improvement on a hand-eye coordination test.

Exercising vigorously will help a drunk person sober up.

plausible

After running for five minutes on a treadmill, Adam’s test had a remarkable improvement over the control test.

Dunking his head in ice water will help a drunk person sober up.

busted

Adam and Jamie, the subjects, showed no improvement on a hand-eye coordination test.

Getting slapped in the face will help a drunk person sober up.

plausible

The results showed a noticeable improvement after the subject was slapped.

A hwacha (ancient Korean weapon) can fire 200 arrows that will explode on impact at once at a range of 500 yards.

confirmed

For the first stage, the Build Team tested whether an ancient rocket powered arrow could travel 500 yards. They found an arrow could travel that far if enough powder is used. In the second stage, they tested whether an ancient arrow could be rigged to lethally explode. They found if packed right, an exploding arrow could inflict a mortal wound. They then moved to the third stage, where they actually built a hwacha to test if it could fire 200 arrows. During the test, the hwacha performed perfectly, firing 199 of the 200 arrows which all landed near the target army. With such conclusive results as well as historical record on their side, the Build Team declared the myth confirmed.

I liked the confirmation of the Korean rocket launcher. But enough of the cast getting drunk. No more, please.

    • bob says:

Dude don’t be a worse buzzkill than Buzz Killington! The cast is freakin hilarious when they’re all drunk!!!

    • Heather says:

It’s all in the name of science. A myth is a myth. That is the name of the show “Mythbusters”

  2. Ben Woolgar says:

The hwacha was AWSOME!! Adam, seeing you get drunk while running on a treadmill makes me and my dad laugh.

  3. Mike England says:

My wife and I LOVE every episode we’ve every scene! [some more than others].
I think the biggest difference is, I think the show is a guy thing and it’s OK so say THIS IS COOL!! But women are not supposed to get into this kinda thing and she is trying to be politically correct.
But, we are in the safety business so we have more fun with your show than a lot of people.
I particularly like all the transportation-related stuff and all the response to veiwer comments.

  4. ryan says:

you guys rook so much! that was so funny when adam got slaped in the face on high speed and then fell on the treadmill,i would never want to meet you in a bar on a bad day

  5. Kim says:

I laughed so hard when Adam fell off the treadmill, I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time…thanks for that!

Keep up the good work, our family loves this show!

  6. Ron says:

    Hey Guys!!

My buddy and I just wondered if it’s the exercise or the fall of Adam that made him sober up? Like the slap in the face:P

  7. Matt Brennan says:

WOW the hwacha was the coolest thing ever i wish it hit the army seeing foam beeing ablterated would be awsome

    • J says:

Could you please learn how to spell properly? It might keep people from “ablterating” you.

  8. Gene Pavlovsky says:

The hwacha myth was wonderful! I sure did see it coming that they would probably miss the army. Should have test-fired with just a couple of arrows to roughly establish where they would go, then deploy the army around that spot. That would make the main launch even more spectacular!

  9. ben reeve says:

    hi guys

i was looking foward to see the rockets but there was a blackout.

  10. Brian Johnson says:

wWhat episode was it when they were tring to get the car tire to ignite from a burnout I can’t find it

  11. Joel Springle says:

I’ve always thought that increasing your metabioism should help your liver process the alcohol more quickly, so you won;t simply perform better but will actually have a lower BAC sooner. This takes at least 20 minutes of vigorous exercise, and would take hours to confirm that your BAC dropped to normal faster than otherwise.

  12. BobBobberson says:

Was it me, or was one of those cart wheels on the hwacha a wheel used to test the myth of a gunpowder engine? It looked like one wheel had the series of welded “scoops” that was used in the past test.

    • MSpears says:

Maybe, but even if it was, I want to point out that it wouldn’t have had any effect on the validity of the test. It couldn’t have been THAT light to move, and no part of the myth said that they couldn’t put wheels on it to make it easier to move. It was all about whether or not it could fire 200 arrows 500 yards and have them explode.

  13. Bria Erik says:

The hwacha is my favourite myth in the show. And adam i cant believe you got drunk AGain.

  14. Jo says:

They messed up the Beer Goggles myth big time. Set me straight here folks, but isn’t the myth that the person you wouldn’t give the time of day to when you are sober, starts to look better to you as you get drunker? Until they look real good? Using different people to rate as they drink more negates the myth as far as I can see.

  15. freddyzdead says:

Please, guys, there isn’t anything entertaining about watching drunks making idiots of themselves. I did that for a lot of years and I can tell you it makes no difference how or what you drink, if you do it long enough it will ruin your life.

  16. Loretta Dunncarter says:

Hilarious, THANK you for the entertaining episode!

  17. Gloria Mairena says:

Hi,guys, I just want to know how true is that if you put the hand of a drunk in warm water while sleeping, he will pee.
from Honduras; thanks for your reply
    porfavor espero su respuesta!!

  18. Scott says:

I would LOVE to get the raw data from the Beer Goggles myth. Not to get too geeky, but the power of the paired t-sample t-test is FAR greater than two-sample t-test. In short, comparing before-versus-after by face will give a much clearer result to the beer goggles test than simply totalling the numbers. If I had the final data set, I could crunch in about 30 seconds to PROVE whether beer goggles are legitimate, even with just 15 faces from the sober and drunk sample. Pretty please, guys? ;o).

  19. Fred Hall says:

In the episode they got the years wrong. The war against Japan was between 1592-1598 and not 100 years earlier like they stated.

  20. Philip says:

The hwacha was one of the best myth rigs I’ve seen so far. I’m sure it would have destroyed Grant’s ‘foam army’ if the angle was calculated to the correct degree. Also, Adam’s falling scene on the treadmill was hilarious!

  21. Enrico Martinez says:

“A hwacha (ancient Korean weapon) can fire 200 arrows that will explode on impact at once at a range of 500 yards.”

Though I haven’t seen the HWACHA episode; (AND i DON’T KNOW WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE) the vague description might have been a HYBRID of:
    A) JUDAS’ BELT (a continuous belt of hundreds or thousands of firecracker that explode consecutively with one lighting); and
    B) AERIAL PYROTECHNICS/ROCKETS (that explode in mid-air or possibly at a directed target)
