Would the dynamite actually be enough to blow up the gas tank in the car, it might be enough to blow up the ice under it.

The Saab and most Volvos are designed to handle a moose hit better than most cars (as mentioned above).
But how do you brake hard on ice with good effect? Not possible. Most moose wander a lot during winther time due to scare food resources.
To save lives you remember this simple advice if you ever encounter an moose a cannot avoid hitting him (on icy road you cannont break enough): but aim for the back leg because a. the moose will flip / rotate ergo minimize the blow to the cabin and b. the moose will not go backwards only forward and ergo the mass of the moose will move in you favour.

Did you guys match the same contions as the myth? I think the ice was thinner than what you guys showed so i think this is still possible. try it again with contions matching more and see. thankx the show is great!!!!

i think that the moose myth comes from the michagan dot cdl video that state that in a medeum to heavytruck that you should not swerve or change vehical adetude prior to hiting a large animal to remain in control of truck

Loved your show on hitting the moose. I know of 2 girls that hit a moose and didn't survive, your info just might save someones life one day. I did have 2 seperate accidents hitting a dear with the same vechicle, "lucky me" and sustained much more damage hitting one at 5 mph than I did at 65. They are alot closer to the road and much less weight. Enjoy your show! Try to avoid moose at all costs:)

ha me and my dad hit a moose in fairbanks, ak, going bout 65 mph, it jumped out about ten feet in front of us, i was riding shotgun it walked out in front of me. With ten feet to act, and traveling 65mph, we were screwed especially me it was coming to sit on my lap, life flashed before my eyes, i wasn't even scared, i just accepted that that was how i was to go out. but the moose slipped on the ice, ha, never saw such beauty in death, we ran up and over the moose, this all happened in 2 seconds, awesome, we were stopped, trying to catch our breath when the moose in his last breaths lifted his head over our hood to stare at us...

Not all cars are built the same way.

There are two manufacturers who test for moose impact.

One of these have a proven track record of offering extremely good moose collision protection: Saab.

An example: http://www.sover.net/~cbrandon/cbrandon/moose.html

My step brother also tested a Saab against a moose. Loaded with three passengers, nobody inside the car were hurt. The speed at impact was approximately 80 kph. (He had been driving faster, but reckoned he managed to break down to 80 kph)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose_test mentions the elk test for those curious as to what I'm talking about.

As for this particular myth, of course you'd want to reduce the speed prior to impact. Being worried about dipping the front is just plain silly. It is a tall animal, and it will have no problems clearing the front of the car. And if, by magic, you're successfull, you'll end up with a 1200 lbs animal on your car's roof. Unless you're driving a SAAB, you'll be squished anyway.

the dynamite under the car wouldnt crack the ice as there was nothing ontop of the dynamite , the explosion would have been a ball of fire as it wasnt channeled, but if the dynamite was under the tyre there should be enough force to channel the explosvie down to crack the ice

The cabin fever one is certainly plausible.
I worked in oil exploration camps in northern Alberta for weeks on end and you could see guys getting 'bushed' after a few weeks.
